The Tenderloin: The Duke of Hawaii

I don’t want self-invented drinks to become too much of a thing in The Tenderloin, but this is one of my favorites.

One time, my friend James and I were watching Cops and drinking a cocktail we’d made out of whatever was left in the house. On screen, a guy was being wrestled off the ground and into a squad car—they had yet to find the inevitable crack on him—and he spouted, “You’re going to be in big trouble when you find out I’m the Duke of Hawaii.” We, of course, burst into laughter, and shortly thereafter named our drink after this perp.

The Duke of Hawaii is similar to a Bourbon Buck, though there are some obvious choices. It’s very much a what’s-left-after-a-party cocktail, but it ain’t bad in that respect.. But if you like your drinks strong and sweet, it’ll do you right.


The Duke of Hawaii 

  • 1 part Red Stag
  • 1 part white rum
  • 2 parts ginger ale
  • Limes

Mix Red Stag and rum in a tumbler full of ice, then add ginger ale. Cut the lime in half, squeeze a whole half of a lime into the glass. Toss in the rind. Stir and enjoy.
